The Pistol Grip is the perfect head for running and gunning while keeping things lightweight and streamlined. It combines the ease and flexibility of one-handed operation with a simple, more convenient mechanism than most ball-style tripod heads.

Believe it or not, the pistol grip was created with the idea of mimicking the motion of the control stick on an ultralight aircraft. Floyd Green, a pilot of both helicopters and small, personal craft, realized that the intuitive motion of the squeeze-to-operate function would translate well to a tripod head.

A New Generation

The Gen 2 Pistol Grip takes that concept one step further with the addition of the Arca-Swiss/Outdoorsmans combo clamp system. This head now accepts both Outdoorsmans plates and any Arca-Swiss style plate.

The design holds up nearly 20 years later with some slight improvements and add-ons that enhance its capabilities for hunting.

We could use this space to wax about the durability of this head, but we’d rather give you the proof of it.

Over nearly two decades, thousands of examples of this tripod head have been dropped, bashed, beaten, and run over countless times. This plucky little piece keeps on taking it. When we receive a Pistol Grip in the shop for service, it is often 10-15 years old. A quick cleaning and tune-up can get even the most weathered examples back in the field in a matter of days.

Use Cases

The Pistol Grip Tripod Head is typically favored by those who tend to glass for movement. In medium-high density areas, this allows a glasser to save time and take inventory of a hillside when there is less need for ultra-fine examination. However, the Pistol Grip has its advantages when it comes to locating hard-to-spot game as well

Combined with the Panner attachment, the Pistol Grip becomes a whole different animal. The separate panning mechanism allows this head to pan without keeping tension on the handle. It’s easily installed, and we highly recommend the combination of the two. With the Panner or Quick-Release Panner, glassing in a “grid” pattern becomes much smoother. The smoother that panning action, the more detail the eye can pick up on.

The Outdoorsmans Pistol Grip can trace its roots to the inception of western glassing techniques, and it’s been a staple for Outdoorsmans customers for over two decades for a reason. It’s simple and effective, but it also has some “sleeper features” such as the rifle rest groove in the body that allows for quick shots when the head is oriented horizontally. For binocular-exclusive glassing, the Pistol Grip is truly one-of-a-kind.
