The Gist

The models of the 42 HD-Plus series are among the most compact binoculars available on the market in their class but their light-gathering power can compete with the larger 50 mm models. Leica Ultravid 42 HD-Plus binoculars are available with a magnification factor of 7x, 8x or 10x. The 7x magnification is a true leading light and so is ideal for use in the hours approaching darkness. In addition, the 7x magnification offers a steady image, because hand trembling or engine vibrations, e.g. on a boat, are not transmitted. The 8x magnification binoculars are real all-rounders. Despite the lower magnification factor, they offer sharp and detailed images and thanks to the good exit pupil they keep performing for a relatively long time in fading light. The excellent field of view of the 8x magnification also offers a good overview, especially in wooded regions. The 10x magnification shows fine details even at long distances – without burdening you with too much weight.

Greased Lightning

Don't overlook Uldravid 7s (Leica Ultravid HD Plus 7x42) because of the low magnification. They have a lot of qualities that are desirable for hunters.
In my home, the Tongass Rainforest in SE AK, the woods are dense, and the light is low. As a result, My needs are to quickly identify an animal in low light, in dense woods, in close.
Ultravid 7s deliver, they are the fastest binoculars that I have ever used by far. They are compact and heavy which makes handling them intuitive and fast. The huge 6mm exit pupil means that they are very bright, especially in low light, and my eyes always land in the view even if the ocular distance is a little off. The huge focus knob is easy to find, and only requires ≈1.3 turns to focus from 10' to ∞. The wide field of view finds animals quickly. The low magnification contributes a very stable image, which means that I can easily hold them with one hand. The resolution is top tier, so if an animal is in the view I will see it. The color is punchy (a little saturated), so animals pop out of their surroundings. All of this comes together to make these binoculars lightning fast. I can grab them off a surface, or out of their bivy, bring them to my eyes, acquire, focus on, and identify an animal, all one-handed in two seconds or less. They really are that fast.
The speed of the Ultravid 7s is a testament to an excellent product overall because the physical and optical attributes have to work well together in order to make it possible.
